The Chemistry Building at the University of Kansas.
The Chemistry building is today named for Edgar Henry Summerfield Bailey. Bailey and John G. Haskell (namesake for Haskell Institute in Lawrence) toured universities throughout the U.S. to get ideas for their own laboratory. When the building was completed in 1900, it was by far the most modern and practical building for chemical and pharmaceutical work west of Chicago. First called the Chemical Laboratory, it was named after Bailey in 1938. Most interesting though is Bailey's contribution to KU's athletic tradition. He was leading a group of KU science club members on an outing, when they created the famous "Rock Chalk, Jayhawk, KU" chant. As they threw stones at a pile of rock chalk, they said "Rock Chalk, Jay Hawk." This chant then turned into the familiar sound heard in Allen Fieldhouse today.
