Buch's Military Band

This band was named for its leader, John Buch, and fostered by the Lawrence Turnverein. It was organized in 1878 with ten members, who continued playing together until 1884. This included two pairs of brothers. They played at all events in Turner Hall. The bank expanded to twenty-eight members by 1900 and played for the public. At the turn of the century the band gave concerts during the summer months in the city's parks. To mark their permanent place in Lawrence's music scene, Buch's Military Band erected a bandstand in South Park in May 1906. The structure is still standing and is still used for musical performances, including weekly concerts in June and July. A dedication plaque is located on the base of the bandstand.
