"Die Beste Gelegenheit im Westen" Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway Co. Map of Kansas. Topeka, Kansas.

This German poster titled "The Best Opportunities in the West" was used in Europe to encourage German-speaking emigrants to settle in Kansas. The shaded area on the map shows land available from the AT & SF Railway for settlement. The text expounds on a variety of topics of interest to prospective settlers throughout the Arkansas River Valley (used in very broad terms). These include: markets and transportation, crops, fruits, prices, building materials, wages, public schools, and testimonials of other settlers (including the colony of Ellinwood).
