Leo Steinberg, native of Nuremberg, Germany joined his brother Simon Steinberg in Lawrence in 1865. Simon had opened clothing companies in partnership with Charles Rosenbaum in Wakefield, Rhode Island, then in St. Louis, Warrensburg and Pleasant Hill, Missouri. When Leo joined their business they opened another branch in Lawrence that year and in Topeka in 1866. Then in 1866 Charles Rosenbaum retired and left the stores to the Steinberg Brothers.

The Lawrence clothing store, Steinberg & Brother Clothing, was known as the "Headquarters for Military Clothing" because of a large assortment of military clothing besides the usual items. It was located at 739 Massachusetts (originally numbered 87 Mass.) and remained there at least until the 1890s.

Although he was not one of the ten charter members of the Lawrence Turnverein like his brother Simon, Leo must have also been active almost from the time of his arrival.
