Founder of Eudora, business man in Lawrence

Julius,a trained carpenter, came from Germany and settled in Chicago in 1856. In 1857 he came to Kansas Territory in a group called the Neusiedlers Verein to establish a town. They chose the townsite for Eudora, and bought the land from an Indian, Pascal Fish. With T. Jenefkowe and Charles Achning he operated a saw mill on the river near DeSoto. He moved his family to Lawrence in 1868.

In Lawrence he operated a retail ice business near the Kaw River. Julius eventually became involved in the shoe business (Menger Shoe Company)with his brother Otto.

Julius Fischer was one of 34 members of the Lawrence Turnverein pictured in composite photographs of 1881. This is composite photo 2C.
