Became mayor of Lawrence after Quantrill's raid.

Dr. Alonzo Fuller was born in Lebanon, Connecticut, April 6, 1818. His education consisted of the common schools and a few terms at private schools. At seventeen years of age he taught school. He then studied medicine and graduated from the Medical Department of Yale College in 1842. In 1857 he came to Lawrence. His brother, Ferdinand was already here.

During the war Dr. Fuller had charge of the United States Hospital at Lawrence. After the Quantrill Massacre he rendered great medical aid to the wounded. Mayor Collomore died during the raid and Dr. Fuller, being president of the city council became ex-officio mayor. While serving as mayor he secured the property and planned the and lay-out of Oak Hill Cemetery.

On September 14, 1845, he married Miss Lucy A. Young of Jewett City, Connecticut. They had three children, two of whom did not live long. Their daughter, Annie, married Mr. Joseph E. Riggs, a lawyer and businessman of Lawrence.

These pictures were given to the Lawrence Room by the Fuller's granddaughters, Miss Kate Riggs and Miss May Riggs of Lawrence, May 1, 1931.
