Early pioneer and wife of Gordon Grovener, 1857.

Mrs. Gordon Grovenor was born Ellen M. Crane. She married Gordon Grovenor on October 28, 1952 in Stuffield, Connecticut. After coming to Lawrence, Kansas, in October, 1857, Mr. Grovenor was first in the grocery business for a few years, then in the lumber business, in which he was a financial success. His large lumber yard was on Massachusets and Berkeley Streets.

The Grovenors had a son, Charles Phelps Grovenor, who married Bertha A. Starr in 1887.

Mr. and Mrs. Gorden Grovenor experienced Quantrill’s Raid. Their house, on the southeast corner of New Hampshire and Berkeley Streets was entirely burned up. They were thankful that Mr. Grovenor was not killed for he was quite exposed and made a narrow escape.

Ellen died April 6, 1869. Mr. Grovenor was married a second time to L. Maria Bliss of Munsen, Mass.

This picture of Mrs. (Ellen M Crane) Grovenor was given to the library by Mr. L. O. McIntyre of Kansas City, Mo. in 1931 at the death of his wife Mrs. Bertha (Grovenor) McIntyre, through Mr. and Mrs. Frank E. Banks April 30, 1931.
