Printing press destroyed in Sam Jones' raid.

This drawing of the Herald of Freedom printing press represents the original which was broken and thrown into the Kaw [Kansas] River during the Sheriff Jones raid of May 21, 1856. Jones' pro-slavery forces burned the Free State Hotel and plundered many other Lawrence homes. After the raid, the press was removed from the river by Hugh Cameron (who had secretly watched the destruction of the press) and taken to his farm at Cameron's Bluff. Eventually, the press was used by nearby farmers for hammering plowshares. Mr. Green traded the farmers another makeshift anvil for the old press, and added it to his historical collection before eventually donating it to the Watkins Community Museum.
