Predecessor to Ernst Hardware.

The inside of Achning Hardware, one of several German businesses on Massachusetts Street in early Lawrence. At left is Philip Ernst Sr., and at far right is Charles Achning, proprietor. Charles Achning began business in Eudora, then continued with a saloon and hardware in Lawrence.

Philip Ernst Sr. worked at Achning Hardware for 17 years before opening his own store. Mr. Achning and Mr. Ernst were prominent German-Americans during their time, having been active members of the Lawrence Turnverein.
