Early businessman in Lawrence.

Here Philip Ernst Sr. is pictured making a sale to the sixth generation of the Cox family at Ernst Hardware. Mr. Ernst is roughly 85 years old in this photograph, and had worked 17 years at Achning Hardware before opening his own store on Massachusetts Street. Mr. Ernst was from Germany, and a longtime member of the Lawrence Turnverein. He participated in several competitions with the men's gymnastics team.
