"Deutsche in Lawrence, KS, 1850-1880"

Frau Phyllis Farrar

This unit is meant to use and develop local community historic resources.  It focuses on the early arrival of German-speaking immigrants in Lawrence, and Douglas County, Kansas, their professions, the institutions they created, and their contributions to the community.  Focus is on the period from 1854 to1880.  Student projects include discovery and development of further resources.  The site will increase as student work is added.

The unit was created for 9th graders in German 2 classes. However, selected activities would be appropriate for German 1 classes, late in the year. Classroom activities are not described here. This is intended as a resource to supplement class activities and to facilitate creating student projects.

  • You will find here a list of activities from which to choose for discovering a few facts and impressions. For some, you will gather information in English, then practice sharing and discussing it in German.

  • The list is organized in two parts; the first part practices the language. The second part is organized by learning styles, to help you locate a project that suits you..

  • Any page designated as "Arbeitsblatt" will print as a worksheet on standard size paper.

Nachschlagewerke

(Resources)

  • Resources come in many forms. Pictures, newspaper articles, newspaper ads, catalogs, and a few books on local history help us piece together the history of German-speaking immigrants to our community. The merchants and skilled laborers, musicians, and professors have shaped our cityscape and our institutions. The story of Lawrence, of Douglas County, of the state of Kansas and of the nation are each unique, yet representative of the whole.

  • Explore these resources. Then choose the topic for which you can provide additional resources.
