CAREER SHADOWING/INTERVIEW

Assignment:

You are to interview an adult in the Lawrence area who does something, either as a vocation or hobby, that is of interest to you. I would prefer that you not interview a relative.

If you can decide on an area of interest (law, medicine, retail sales, accounting, banking, cosmetology, restoration of homes, etc.), I will help you locate a person to interview.

You are to:

Call and set up an appointment with the interviewee. You are to do this, not your mom or dad. The interview should take place at the interviewee’s place of employment if at all possible. Phone interviews are acceptable only at the request of your interviewee and will, most likely, result in a lower grade.

Think of a minimum of 15 questions to take with you to the interview. I suggest you ask questions about the person's past (educational background, what or who has influenced their life), present (typical day on job, what they like best and least about job, interesting job experiences), future (goals, changes)--also include questions on family, hobbies, advice to young people, etc. You must come up with additional original questions that are pertinent to your career choice.
Your interview may be taped if the interviewee consents. Be sure to check-out your recorder ahead of time. I will not accept the excuse that your recorder malfunctioned. Also, if you tape your interview, you will still need to write up the questions and answers in your report form. I cannot listen to the tape.

Due Date--On______________________you are to hand in a project paper, in ink or typed, which consists of the following sections:

1. Biographical information:

a. name of interviewee
b. type of job
c. name of company
d. phone number

2. A written explanation of:

a. how you went about setting up the interview
b. any problems you encountered
c. location of interview
d. length of interview
e. tour of facility?

3. A copy of your questions and answers.

4. An explanation of what you got out of this interview--what you learned about this occupation, your impression of the interviewee, summer job contact?

Grade=150 points possible

50 points--quality/depth and originality of questions
50 points--thoroughness of questions
50 points--qualtiy of written report
